Louis Cyriaque Striffler

Born on 27 September 1772 in Mutzig (Bas-Rhin), died on 5 June 1834 in Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin).

Louis Striffler volunteers on 12 August 1792 as Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion of the Lower-Rhine. His battalion is incorporated in 1794 in the 171st Battle Half-brigade that becomes the 94th Line Half-brigade on 16 September 1796, and 94th Line Infantry Regiment in the reorganization of 24 September 1803. He campaigns from 1792 to 1801 in various armies of the Republic, distinguishes himself at Frankfurt in 1792 and during the siege of Mainz in 1793 where he becomes Captain on 8 June. He serves with the Army of Mainz in Vendee and is appointed as Major on 3 November 1795. In 1796, he takes part in the Expedition of Ireland commanded by General Hoche.

Employed in the army of Hanover at the end of 1802, he is put in charge of the organization of the Hanoverian Legion and is appointed as provisional Colonel on 12 August 1803, assigned as Lieutenant-Colonel in the 75th Line Infantry Regiment on 22 December 1803. He is awarded Knight’s cross of the Legion of Honour on 25 March 1804 and his rank of Colonel of the Hanoverian Legion is confirmed on next 17 May. He leads his regiment during the campaigns from 1807 to 1810 in Spain and Portugal, and is awarded Officer’s Cross of the Legion of Honour on 13 January 1809. Suffering from serious infirmities, he is allowed to take retirement on 13 December 1810.
