Mathieu Queunot

Born on 27 March 1766 in Gray (Haute-Saône), died in 1843 in Sedan (Ardennes)

Mathieu Queunot volunteers on 8 January 1783 in the cavalry regiment Colonel-General and is discharged on 26 August 1790. He is recalled and posted as Lieutenant on 1 October 1791 in the Hussars of the Ardennes to become the 23rd Chasseurs-a-Cheval Regiment in 1793. Appointed Captain on 23 May 1793, he takes part gloriously in the campaigns of 1792 and 1793 in the Armies of the North and of the Ardennes and those from 1794 to 1797 in the Army of Sambre-and-Meuse. He becomes supernumerary Major on 23 June 1800 and gets a charge in the 4th Cavalry Regiment on 14 December 1801. Promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in the 1st Dragoons Regiment on 29 October 1803, he is awarded Knight’s cross of the Legion of Honour on 25 March 1804.

On 31 December 1806, he is appointed Colonel of the 9th Dragoons Regiment and leads it during the Polish campaign. Elevated to the rank of Baron of the Empire on 19 March 1808, he serves in Spain from 1808 to 1811 and his conduct earns him the Officer’s Cross of the Legion of Honour on 6 January 1811. He returns in France to convert his regiment into 4th Light Horses Lancers Regiment and is promoted to Brigadier on 6 August 1811. Severely wounded at Borodino, he must leave service and is allowed to take retirement on 19 September 1813.
