Jean Sylvestre Joannès
Born on 31 December 1772 in Paris, died on 24 February 1854.
Jean Joannès volunteers in the Champagne regiment (9th dragoons) on October 6, 1790, he takes part in the campaign of the Army of the Moselle, where he is wounded in Fleurus, moves on 27 June 1795 in the cavalry of the Police Legion and is transferred on 21 December 1796 in the Horse Grenadiers Regiment of the Directory Guard, where he is appointed Quartermaster-Corporal on 19 October 1799. Sergeant in the Horse Grenadiers Regiment of the Consular Guardon 3 January 1800, he fights at Marengo and is promoted to Quartermaster-Second-Lieutenant in the Chasseurs-a-Cheval Regiment of the Consular Guardon 1st August 1801 and awarded Knight’s cross of the Legion of Honour on 14 June 1804. He becomes Lieutenant on 23 September 1804, fights at Austerlitz and Jena, is wounded at Eylau and becomes Captain on 16 February 1807. He takes part in the Spanish campaign in 1808 and Austrian campaign in 1809, fights at Essling and Wagram, and is awarded Officer’s cross of the Legion of Honour on 15 March 1810. He is elevated to the rank of Knight of the Empire on 19 January 1811.
Major on 23 October 1811, he campaigns with the Guard in Russia and Saxony, where he is wounded at Hanau. He is promoted supernumerary Colonel in the 11th Dragoons Regiment on 1st December 1813 and takes command of the 2nd Light Horses Lancers Regimenton 23 February 1814.
He keeps his command after the abdication and takes on 27 September 1815 command of the Marne Chasseurs-a-Cheval Regiment (12th Chasseurs-a-Cheval). He is awarded Commander’s cross of the Legion of Honour on 1st May 1821 and promoted to Brigadier on 3 October 1823. He is finally allowed to take retirement on 1st August 1834.
